Ewald Haase

Ewald Haase (born May 8, 1849 , † May 27, 1930 in Cottbus ) was a German firefighter, politician and cycling official. He is considered the forefather of the Cottbus fire brigade and a pioneer of Cottbus cycling. In 1926 he was made an honorary citizen of Cottbus .

Life

Ewald Haase was born the son of a master glove maker. After attending the community school, he learned his father's profession. He also worked in Magdeburg and Vienna . He later took over his father's Cottbus store on Berliner Strasse.

From 1871 he was a member of the volunteer fire brigade, which was founded in 1863 by members of the Cottbus gymnastics club . In 1898 he became deputy Oberführer, from 1901 Oberführer and in 1928 until his death honorary chief. In 1897 Haase became chairman of the 9th sub-division of the Provincial Fire Brigade Association and in 1915 took over the management of the administrative office of the Provincial Association.

In 1902 Haase became a city councilor in Cottbus. He was also elected to the Prussian House of Representatives in 1913 as one of three representatives of the constituency of Liegnitz 8 ( Lauban , City and District of Görlitz ) , to which he belonged until 1918. There he was a member of the Group of the Progressive People's Party . He was involved in committees for fire fighting and the Brandenburg Fire Brigade Accident Fund .

Ewald Haase was very fond of cycling and between 1897 and 1921 was Gau Chairman of the German Cyclists' Association .

Honors

In 1926 he was made an honorary citizen of Cottbus on his 25th anniversary as Oberführer in the Cottbus fire department. Shortly after his death in June 1930, the new main fire station was opened. The street in front of it was named Ewald-Haase-Straße in his honor , which it still bears today.
