The Institute - Oasis of failure is a German Workplace - sitcom about the work of a German cultural institute in the Central Asian imagination State Kisbekistan . The six employees try to convey a positive image of Germany with language courses and events, largely ignoring the interest of the locals. The German language and cultural institute depicted in the series bears unmistakable traits of the Goethe Institute .
The series is a co-production of the broadcasters Bayerischer Rundfunk , Norddeutscher Rundfunk and Westdeutscher Rundfunk as well as BR Puls and ARD-alpha (season 1) or by BR, NDR, WDR and MagentaTV (season 2).
In 2020, Bayerischer Rundfunk brought out an eight-part podcast with the actors of the television series (moderated by Ariane Alter ).

Kallalabad , the capital of the Islamic People's Republic of Kisbekistan : This is where one of over a hundred German language and cultural institutes worldwide is located. Under the direction of Dr. Eckart offers the institute German courses, theater performances and guest performances by German artists as well as a wide selection of German-language books, films and CDs. The only problem: The Kisbeken stay away from the institute. The local population has enough of their own worries - disease, corruption, war - and therefore no nerve to get involved with German culture.
And so the five expats and their Kisbek regional coordinator are more or less stewing in their own juice; play football against the employees of the Dutch Embassy, make themselves available as a polling station for the Kisbek municipal elections, donate blood for the Red Cross, organize a board game evening - and constantly have to find excuses to dissuade the Munich headquarters from closing the site. Numerous rifts run within the workforce - Ossi versus Wessi, Christian versus Stalinist, hipster versus Philistine - but also a tender love story that is developing between the German teacher Jördis and Kisbeken Haschim.
Although the employees of the institute are cosmopolitan and culturally open-minded, their German arrogance of leading cultures and their latent racism keep coming to light. And despite the directive to deal with the religion and customs of the host country as sensitively as possible, the employees step from one intercultural faux pas to the next and at the end of each episode are on the verge of conjuring up a clash of cultures .

The shooting took place exclusively in a former women's prison and courthouse in the Berlin district of Moabit , which was given the impression of the Middle East through appropriate equipment and digital backgrounds .
The series premiered on October 28, 2017 in Munich : three episodes were presented at the series camp . In the vote for the audience award, Das Institut came in 3rd place - behind Mary Kills People and Babylon Berlin . The premiere of the 2nd season took place at the Munich Film Festival 2019.
criticism
The series was widely praised in the press and praised for its daring and gag density:

Podcast
In 2020, an eight-part radio play series was produced with the actors of the series , which is located between the 1st and the 2nd TV season. After the German Language and Culture Institute Kallalabad was voted the most popular institute worldwide in an online survey, journalist and presenter Ariane Alter made her way to Kallalabad to get to the bottom of the surprising result. The role of the Jördis was taken on by Kaya Marie Möller , with the author Robert Löhr directing.
