Culture clash comedy
As a culture clash comedy (even Clash-of-culture comedy ;. Of English, culture clash 'clash of cultures) refers to a special type of film comedy , the comedy thrives on the clash of cultures. The term is often used by film critics.
Culture clash comedies make use of differences in everyday life (manners and customs). It is often about clichéd peculiarities of members of different nationalities (vacationers, migrants), but also class-specific differences. A frequent topic is intercultural love relationships, which are difficult to reconcile with family and social environment, shown in the exaggerated inflexibility of at least some of the protagonists (parents etc.) in intercultural communication . The culture clash comedy uses moments of situation comedy from these differences .
The term is a sham Anglicism . In English, the term 'fish out of water comedy film' is used as a superordinate term for comedies whose comedy develops from the fact that the main character is generally removed from their familiar surroundings. More generally, the term 'fish-out-of-water' is also used in German film studies.
