action

In 1975 , Seyolo Zantoko, originally from Zaire , received his doctorate degree after studying in Lille . Because he refuses the dictatorship in his home country and hopes to become a French citizen, he accepts the offer of the mayor of Marly-Gomont , a rural municipality in northern France, to become a country doctor there. Seyolo, his wife and his two children Sivi and Kamini move into a house that the community has given them.

The villagers have never had black roommates and react negatively. The two children are initially marginalized at school, but they can soon find their way around. Seyolo's wife Anne has a harder time. It rains a lot and the house is cold, she is lonely. That's why she likes to call the relatives in Kinshasa . The first phone bill is 10,000 francs .

Seyolo waits for patients in his practice every day. But they prefer to go to the white country doctor 15 km away. The old farmer Jean recommends seeking the company of the villagers. Seyolo learns to play darts and spends his evenings in the village pub. Because he doesn't earn any money as a doctor, he helps Jean for money on his farm. Because he has not told his wife about it, she suspects that he has a lover.

The election campaign for the mayor's office is underway. Monsieur Quinquin wants to become the new mayor. He therefore criticizes the incumbent mayor for not being able to ensure medical care for the villagers.

Meanwhile, the pub-goers are starting to seek medical advice from Seyolo. Seyolo's son Kamini has brought home a classmate who has a rash. Seyolo diagnoses a bacterial disease and successfully applies a mud pack . When a pregnant villager went into labor prematurely, he helped the woman to give birth despite the difficult breech position.

Sivi is an enthusiastic and good football player. In school sports lessons, however, only the boys play soccer. Sivi sets up her own team and kicks so successfully that the sports teacher informs the coach of the local soccer team. He takes Sivi - although she is a girl - into the team.

At Christmas, Seyolo's Brussels relatives come to visit and mix up the dreary village church service with gospels . When Seyolo's college friend said that after completing his studies, Seyolo received an offer to become the personal physician of the black African dictator Mobutu Sese Seko , and that his family could have lived in luxury, Seyolo's wife, who did not know this, is outraged by his decision at the time and travels there her sister to Brussels.

Seyolo's waiting room is now well filled every day. But new adversity is brewing. In order to discredit the incumbent mayor, Quinquin threads an intrigue: He finds out that Seyolo's original citizenship is not clear. As a result, Seyolo is no longer allowed to practice. He is considering moving to his relatives in Brussels.

Seyolo and his son Kamini go to a local soccer game. To Seyolo's surprise, his daughter Sivi, who had actually been banned from playing football, is a member of the village team and scores one goal after the other. The villagers celebrate the success of their team. Seyolo calls Brussels to tell his wife and ask her to come back.

Seyolo has realized that his fate and that of the mayor are linked. That's why he tells the villagers that he has to leave the village and that they would lose the star of the soccer team with him. Only with the incumbent mayor Ramollu would Seyolo and his family be able to stay in the village. When the villagers realize this, they vote for Réné Ramollu in the mayoral election. Anne Seyolo returns that day.

On election day, the children put on a play at school that they have written and designed themselves. It tells the story of the Seyolos; Kamini plays his father. He thinks that sometimes the children can help their parents too.

At the end of the film, viewers learn from text panels that Seyolo practiced until his death in 2009. His children went to Brussels and Lille. Both took up a medical profession. His son Kamini wrote the rap song heard during the credits , in which he describes his own childhood in Marly-Gomont.

criticism

The film service noticed that in the culture-clash comedy "all kinds of clichés collide" and the "interesting life story" dissolves into an integration smack in the course of the "pleasing and sensitive staging".

Deutschlandfunk Kultur sums up: "Here not only purrs are told, but everyday racism is dealt with. This is due to Kamini Zantoko, the son of the real doctor who has become a successful rapper and comedian. The conversion into a comedy by director Julien Rambaldi makes the film something special. The atmosphere of the colorful 70s is very nice and, in contrast, the rap song by Kamini, which has become a huge hit on the Internet. "

At IMDb , the film received 7 out of 10 stars with a total of 4,122 ratings.
