The Gurgler Ferner is a glacier in the Ötztal Alps . With an area of 9.58 km², it is now only the third largest glacier in the Austrian state of Tyrol behind the Gepatsch and Mittelbergferner , after the latter has been less affected by the glacier retreat in recent years . Due to the demarcation, which in this area is not always based on the ice or watershed , smaller parts of the glacier are also located on Italian territory and are protected in the South Tyrolean Texel Group Nature Park .

Position and shape

The Gurgler Ferner is a typical valley glacier and flows from the Gurgler Kamm , which is part of the main Alpine ridge , about eight kilometers north into the Gurgler Tal . The Gurgler Ferner is embedded between the Ramolkamm with the Schalfkogel in the west and the Schwärzenkamm in the east. On the orographic right bank of the glacier is the Hochwildehaus .

history

In addition to the even more notorious Vernagtferner , the Gurgler Ferner in the Ötztal was also feared for its glacial lake eruptions. When the ice of the glacier reached as far as the Langtalereck , the outflows of the Langtaler Ferners further to the east built up , and the Gurgler Eissee , also known as Gurgler Lacke , formed up to 4 km² in size . In the years 1717 and 1770 its emptying devastated the Gurgler Valley and the Ötztal.

In 1931 Gurgler Ferner made headlines when the Swiss scholar Auguste Piccard and his assistant landed on the Gurgler Ferner after setting a balloon altitude record on May 27th .
