Carl Overweg

Carl Overweg (born November 28, 1805 in Unna ; † May 27, 1876 in Letmathe , today a district of Iserlohn ; full name: Carl Adolph Overweg ) was a German politician and industrialist.

Entrepreneurial career

After studying law in Bonn, where he became a member of the Corps Guestphalia , Overweg entered the Prussian civil service in 1826 . From 1830 he worked as a judicial commissioner (i.e. lawyer ) in Iserlohn and Hohenlimburg . In 1842 he became a landowner and in 1852 he bought the Letmathe house . He was a member of the general commission for brand division.

He was involved in mining and founded the Letmather zinc smelter . He rose to become an influential industrialist through supervisory and administrative board mandates at Hibernia AG , Berliner Handels-Gesellschaft , Deutsche Bank AG and A. Schaaffhausen'schen Bankverein . Due to his entrepreneurial achievements, he was also a judge at the world exhibitions in Paris and London.

In addition to these supraregional activities, he also played an important role in promoting industry in the Sauerland in the Brandenburg region , for example as President of the Iserlohn Chamber of Commerce . Due to his political influence he was responsible for the construction of the "Iserlohner Bahn" (1864), during the expansion of which in 1868 the Dechen cave was discovered.

Political influence

Overweg was a non-attached member of the Frankfurt National Assembly for Iserlohn from November 10, 1848 to May 20, 1849 , in 1850 he was a member of the Erfurt Union Parliament and until 1852 a member of the First Chamber of the Prussian State Parliament. From 1858 to 1873 he was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives, from 1871 to 1874 he was a member of the Reichstag for the constituency of the administrative district of Arnsberg 3 (Iserlohn-Altena). In the Reichstag he was a member of the national liberal parliamentary group. He always belonged to moderately left or liberal factions.

Carl Overweg was accepted into the Freemason Lodge for German Righteousness in Iserlohn in 1833 .

His son August Overweg also became a politician. His grandson Friedrich Overweg (born in Letmathe) sold the entire property of Haus Letmathe to Prince Adolf zu Bentheim, Tecklenburg and Rheda in 1918 .
