Jan Brandt (theologian)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jan Brandt (* 1554 probably in Poznan ; † May 27, 1602 in Lemberg ) was a Polish theologian and composer.

Brandt entered the Jesuit order in 1571 and was ordained in 1578. After studying in Rome, he was a member of the Jesuit convents in Krakow, Pultusk, Posen and Vilnius from 1584. From 1599 to 1601 he made another trip to Rome and then became superior of the Jesuit college in Lemberg. He was an important theologian and preacher of the Counter Reformation.

Brandt's compositional work was thought to be lost. It was not until 1972 that an organ tablature of 1620 compositions (including a four-part Coelestes merces ) was found in the holdings of Uppsala University , which probably come from the lost collection Pieśni różne pospolite o różnych pobożnych potrzebach roku 1601 .
