Bohdan Arct (born May 27, 1914 in Warsaw ; † May 11, 1973 in Siedlce ; read: doctor ) was a Polish author and fighter pilot .

Life

Bohdan was born in Warsaw in 1914 to the publisher Zygmunt Arct and the children's book author Maria Buyno-Arctowa . After graduating from high school in 1933, he completed the one-year military service in the reserve school of the Polish Air Strike Forces in Dęblin . In the following years he continued to operate in aviation and was promoted to officer in 1936 . From 1934 to 1935 he completed an internship at the M. Arct publishing house in Warsaw and then studied graphic design from 1935 to 1939 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw .

He fought in the Polish army as a pilot until the surrender of Poland at the beginning of the Second World War . He then fled to France via Romania and Syria . There he served as a flight instructor in Blida near Algiers until France also surrendered. He then went to Great Britain and was trained as a fighter pilot in Heston in early 1941. He flew missions in North Africa and England from March to May 1943 . Promoted to major in the Royal Air Force , he was shot down over Holland in 1944 and interned as a prisoner of war in Stalag Luft I in Barth .

After his release from captivity in 1945, he went back to England. From there he moved with his English wife Beryl and daughter to Breslau in 1947 and to Gołków near Warsaw in 1948 . In 1952 he moved to Dobrzanów near Siedlce. Until 1956, like many returnees from the Allied armed forces in the Eastern Bloc , he suffered from repression by the new (Moscow-controlled) Polish government.

Between 1944 and 1973 he wrote forty-four books with a total circulation of four million copies. Bohdan Arct died in 1973 at the age of 58.

His most important work is probably Kamikaze - Boski Wiatr , ( Eng . Kamikaze - Divine Wind ). The German translations have different subtitles, e.g. B. “From the diary of a Kamikaze”, “Diary of a Kamikaze” or “A death aviator kept a diary”.
