Life

Marie Helene Aarestrup, daughter of the Norwegian magistrate Peter Nicolai Aarestrup and his wife Sara, née Haasted, received her first artistic training in 1843 from the painter Hans L. Reusch in Bergen and continued it in Copenhagen from 1843 to 1844. After her father's death (1846), she lived in Copenhagen from 1848 to 1851, where she attended a teacher training college. She then worked as a private teacher in Denmark and Sweden until 1854. From 1859–1863 she studied with Jean-Baptiste-Ange Tissier (1814–1876) in Paris. In 1863 she presented an Italian shepherd boy at her first exhibition in Christiania (now Oslo ) . Supported by a government grant in the same year, she was able to work for six months in Düsseldorf for the Swiss painter Benjamin Vautier . From 1865 to 1871 she lived in Bergen. She later worked again in Paris, first at Tissier and then in the women-only studio of the French painter Charles Josuah Chaplin . Her works mainly included portraits and genre pictures. Her outstanding portrait of the Swedish opera singer Christine Nilsson was shown at the Paris Salon in 1865 and at the Scandinavian Exhibition in Stockholm in 1866 .

Aarestrup not only worked as a painter, but also pursued other fields of activity, often working abroad. She taught languages in England around 1871 and 1888 . She also stayed in Paris often. Her works were presented at the 1883 Fisheries Exhibition in London and in 1886 at the Bergen State Art Exhibition. After traveling to Poland in 1872 , the representation of horses became a main focus of her further activities. In recognition of this work, she was able to receive a silver medal at an exhibition in Paris in 1904. In her later years she also lived mainly in the French capital and died there in 1919 at the age of 93.
