Elisabeth von Braunschweig (* approx. 1230 ; † May 27, 1266 ) was the Roman-German Queen from 1252 to 1256 through marriage.

Life

Elisabeth von Braunschweig was born as the third daughter of the Guelph Duke Otto I of Braunschweig and his Ascanian wife Mathilde , daughter of Margrave Albrecht II of Brandenburg.

On January 25, 1252, she was married to the Roman-German antagonist Wilhelm of Holland in Braunschweig. The wedding brought important family connections to the Welfs and the Brandenburg Ascanians, who had previously been neutral in the controversy for the throne, and now openly sided with Wilhelm, for the elected rival king who was crowned in Aachen. From 1254 Wilhelm was generally recognized as king. The marriage had two children. The marriage lasted only a short time, as her husband Wilhelm died four years after the wedding. Queen Elisabeth survived him by 10 years and was buried in the abbey church of Middelburg . Her husband, who had previously been buried in Hoogwoud, was transferred to Middelburg in 1282.
