Alina Cojocaru (born May 27, 1981 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian ballet dancer . She was principal dancer with the Royal Ballet in London .

Life

Cojocaru took dance lessons from early childhood, but never saw a ballet performance. At the age of nine she received a scholarship to the ballet school of the Kiev Ballet. Without any knowledge of the national language, she began her training, after a year she and her Romanian classmates were receiving Russian school lessons.

After training in Kiev she came in 1997 through a grant from the Prix de Lausanne of the London Royal Ballet School . In 1998 Cojocaru received her first engagement as a soloist at the Kiev Ballet. In 1999 she became a member of the Royal Ballet's soloist , and in 2001 she was appointed principal soloist. Alina Cojocaru has also appeared as a guest dancer with the Kirow Ballet , the American Ballet Theater , the Hamburg Ballet , the Royal Danish Ballet and the Hungarian National Ballet.

At the end of the 2013/2013 season, Cojocaru left the Royal Ballet. Her last performance on the London stage was on June 5, 2013 in Mayerling.

Cojocaru became the mother of a daughter in October 2017 and returned to the stage in February 2018. In December 2018 she appeared in repertoire performances of Nutcracker , Swan Lake and Manon at the London Coliseum .

Private life

Cojocaru lives with her fiancé, Johann Kobborg , also a principal dancer at the Royal Ballet in London. After she began dancing most of the roles with him as a partner, the two officially announced in 2005 that they were a couple. On her 30th birthday, Johann Kobborg proposed to her on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Their engagement was announced shortly thereafter.
