Hans Müllejans

Johannes (Hans) Müllejans (born March 12, 1929 in Gressenich - Vicht ; † August 5, 2009 in Stolberg - Venwegen ) was Aachen Cathedral Provost .

Life

Hans Müllejans studied Catholic theology in Munich from 1949 and was ordained a priest on February 28, 1953 in the cathedral by Bishop Johannes Joseph van der Velden . He was then released for further studies and at the end of 1956 was awarded a Dr. iur. can. PhD in Canon Law . After two years as chaplain in Stolberg , Müllejans switched to the diocese secretary in the general vicariate, where he was responsible for the personnel department from 1968 to 1984 and was deputy general vicar from 1975 to 1995. After he became cathedral vicar in 1959 and resident cathedral capitular in 1974 , he became provost of Aachen cathedral in 1977. In 1970 Müllejans was named monsignor ; Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Papal Honorary Prelate on January 5, 1979 . Due to his age, Müllejans retired as provost on March 12, 2004 . His successor was prelate Herbert Hammans . Müllejans was a member of the diocesan priests council for 36 years and in the diocesan administrative council for 30 years. He was also President of the Kolping Family in Aachen and in the Aachen district from 1962 .

Müllejans was very committed to the preservation and renovation of Aachen Cathedral during his tenure as provost and beyond. The “Aachen Cathedral Needs Help” campaign that he started has raised almost 30 million euros for the complete renovation over the past 25 years. He also initiated the European Aachen Cathedral Foundation .

Müllejans was awarded the Krüzzbrür Order in 1982 by the Heilig-Kreuz parish . In 1989 he received the Golden Ring of Honor of the City of Aachen for his commitment , the then Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia Johannes Rau called him a “gifted beggar” and in 1998 presented him with the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany . In the same year he was awarded the Aachen newspaper duck by the Aachen Press Association. In 2000 he received the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, First Class . In 2002 he was given honorary citizenship by the city of Aachen for his sustained commitment to Aachen Cathedral . In 2004 he succeeded Dagmar Schipanski as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the European Foundation for the Aachen Cathedral.

Since 1949 he was a member of the Catholic student union KDSt.V. Rheno-Franconia Munich in the CV , later also the KDSt.V. Bergland (Freiberg) Aachen and the KDSt.V. Kaiserpfalz Aachen and also honorary member of the KStV Carolingia Aachen in KV .
