Girolamo Mei

Girolamo Mei (born May 27, 1519 in Florence , † July 1594 in Rome ) was an Italian historian and humanist .

He was a student of Piero Vettori . After Boëthius , he was the first European to investigate ancient Greek music theory and put his findings in De modis musicis Antiquorum (written between 1568 and 1573 but not published). His Discorso sopra la musica antica et moderna was first printed by Giovanni Battista Ciotti in Venice in 1602 and published as a facsimile in 1933 and 1968. He put forward the - probably wrong - thesis that the great Greek tragedies of antiquity were actually sung and not conceived as spoken works. He corresponded with his student Vincenzo Galilei . Since the polyphony was not compatible with his idea of ancient song, he propagated unison music.

His theses became known to the Accademia degli Alterati , founded by Antonio degli Albizzi (1547–1606) in 1569 , and its subunit, the Florentine Camerata .

From his theses in Florence at the end of the 16th century the recitative style (spoken chant with instrumental accompaniment) emerged, from which monody , musical dramas and opera emerged.
