Anna Elisabeth of Saxony-Lauenburg

Anna Elisabeth von Sachsen-Lauenburg (born August 23, 1624 in Ratzeburg , † May 27, 1688 in Philippseck ) was a princess of Sachsen-Lauenburg and, by marriage, Landgravine of Hesse-Homburg .

Life

Anna Elisabeth was a daughter of Duke August von Sachsen-Lauenburg (1577–1656) from his first marriage to Elisabeth Sophie (1599–1627), daughter of Duke Johann Adolph von Holstein-Gottorf .

She married Landgrave Wilhelm Christoph von Hessen-Homburg (1625–1681) in Lübeck on April 2, 1665 . For Wilhelm Christoph it was the second marriage; from his first marriage to Sophie Eleonore von Hessen-Darmstadt only two daughters had survived and Anna Elisabeth was to bring the hoped-for heir. The princess, whom the landgrave only knew from her portrait, was, to Wilhelm Christoph's surprise, misshapen and unable to bear children. As a prince he stood by his marriage promise, but immediately tried to get a divorce, which he was finally able to enforce in 1672. According to other sources, Wilhelm Christoph had hoped for a huge bride-to-be , but it turned out to be much more modest. After this was used up, Wilhelm Christoph accused his wife of marriage as "unfit" and divorced.

Anna Elisabeth was assigned to Schloss Philippseck near Butzbach-Münster as her home. She tried to care for the poor and founded schools in Bodenrod and Maibach . She died at Philipseck Castle on May 27, 1688 at the age of 64 and is buried in the church of Münster in the crypt under the choir.
