Margrethe Aabel Munthe (born May 27, 1860 in Elverum ( Norway ), † January 20, 1931 ) was a Norwegian teacher, writer and children's book author.

In addition to many children's books, she wrote many children's songs that are still popular throughout Scandinavia , such as the well-known birthday song Hurra for deg , the Christmas carol På låven sitter nissen or the children's songs Å jeg vet en seter , Vi har ei tulle .

As a teacher, she always tried to write child-friendly songs and poems that the auditorium can combine with movements. For many of the sung works, standardized sequences of movements such as jumping, turning or jumping up have become established for certain text passages. Munthe, who also taught sports, believed that this was how the children could experience the pieces.

Margrethe Munthe was the sister of the Norwegian painter Gerhard Munthe .
