The Collegio Papio (actually Collegio di Santa Maria della Misericordia ) is a Roman Catholic middle school in Ascona , Canton Ticino , Switzerland .
history
On the initiative of Charles Borromeo , it was built in 1585 in the Renaissance style based on a project by Tibaldo Pellegrino from Valsolda . The money for this came from Bartolomeo Papio (1526–1580) from Ascones, who had become rich in the service of Orsini in Rome . He gave up his palazzo in Ascona in order to make all his possessions available to his home community for the construction of a Jesuit college.
The building was built next to the Church of Santa Maria della Misericordia , which belonged to a Dominican monastery , and served as a seminary and college. The Renaissance courtyard and a bas-relief from 1602 at the north entrance are worth seeing.
In 1852 the monastery underwent secularization , was in 1885 the Apostolic Administrator in later to become Roman Catholic Diocese of Lugano subordinated and led by various religious orders: from 1894 to 1910 by the Salesians of Don Bosco , from 1910 to 1917 by the Assumptionists and from 1924 to 1964 by the by Aurelio Bacciarini appointed Benedictines of the Einsiedeln monastery . After that, Angelo Jelmini entrusted the college to the leadership of the diocesan clergy.
The future bishops Amédée Grab and Pier Giacomo Grampa acted as rectors of the college .
