Sophie Countess von Waldburg-Syrgenstein , also from Waldburg-Zeil and Trauchburg , born. Countess von Waldburg-Zeil-Wurzach (born June 4, 1857 at Reichenburg Castle in Lower Styria, today Grad Rajhenburg, Brestanica , Slovenia; † January 6, 1924 in Neutrauchburg , today to Isny ​​in Allgäu) was a German poet.

Life

She was born as the daughter of Prince Eberhard II of Waldburg-Zeil-Wurzach (1828–1903) (this line of the Waldburg family died out with the death of her father in 1903). On November 16, 1882, she married her cousin, the explorer Karl Graf von Waldburg-Zeil und Trauchburg, 16 years her senior . From 1885, with the permission of the King of Bavaria, he named himself Count von Waldburg-Syrgenstein after Syrgenstein Castle in the Allgäu (today Heimenkirch municipality ), the couple's residence. The marriage remained childless and ended in 1890 with the death of the husband.

In 1891 the widow married the k. and k. diplomatic agent and consul general in Egypt Karl von Heidler – Egeregg (* 1848, † 1917), who was raised to the rank of baron in December 1891. In 1897 he was allowed to associate his name with Syrgenstein, whereupon he called himself Heidler von Egeregg and Syrgenstein . Sophie's marriage also remained childless.

She published several volumes of poetry under the name S. Waldburg . Her topics are wide-ranging and range from edifying idyll to patriotic-nationalistic battle chants. Her best-known poem "We are ready", which she wrote in 1888 in response to a Bismarck speech on the defense bill, was set to music by Norbert Hoft as a "Volkslied für Massenchor" (1889).
