Elsa von Gutmann
Elsa von Gutmann (actually Elisabeth; born January 6, 1875 in Vienna ; † September 28, 1947 in Vitznau ) was Princess of Liechtenstein .
biography
She was the daughter of Wilhelm Isak, Ritter von Gutmann and his second wife Ida Wodianer and was born in Vienna in 1875. Her father was a Jewish entrepreneur from Moravia who, with his coal trading company, held a leading position in the Habsburg Monarchy 's market and was only ennobled by Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1878 . From 1891 to 1892 he was President of the Vienna Israelite Religious Community.
Elsa married the Hungarian baron Géza Erős von Bethlenfalva in Vienna , who died young on August 7, 1908. In 1914 she got to know Franz von Liechtenstein through the relief fund for soldiers . Prince Johann II was against the inappropriate association of his brother. On February 11, 1929, Franz as Franz I followed his unmarried and childless brother Johann as Prince of Liechtenstein, on July 22, 1929 the marriage took place.
Franz I and Elsa were the first Liechtenstein ruling couple to seek contact with the Liechtenstein population and to visit the country regularly. Elsa made sick visits to hospitals, visited public institutions and gave presents to poor people. Her kindness made her very popular with the people, and the Franz and Elsa Foundation for Liechtenstein youth still exists today.
After her husband's death, she lived in a house on Semmering , after the annexation of Austria to Nazi Germany , she had to go into exile in Switzerland and died there shortly after the war in Vitznau on Lake Lucerne . She was the first princess who was no longer buried in Vranov u Brna , but in the new princely crypt next to the Vaduz cathedral .
