Life

Berthe Bovy was the daughter of the journalist , poet and playwright Théophile Bovy , who wrote the text for Le Chant des Wallons , Wallonia's hymn . Her father gave her a vocal training and her first small roles in stage works .

In 1921 she celebrated great success on a tour with the piece La Terre by André Antoine . At the Comédie-Française she played with well-known actors such as Madeleine Renaud , Fernand Ledoux and Pierre Fresnay , whom she married in 1929 in their third marriage, while it was Fresnay's second marriage.

In the film Le Jouer (1938) by Louis Daquin and Gerhard Lamprecht , the French-language version of Lamprecht's film The Gambler (1938), she played the highly acclaimed role of 'babushka' alongside Pierre Blanchar and Viviane Romance .

After the occupation of Belgium by the German Wehrmacht during the western campaign in World War II in 1940, she refused to tour Germany in 1942 and left the Théâtre français . Nevertheless, she played roles in plays such as Arsenic et Vieilles Dentelles (arsenic and lace cap) by Joseph Kesselring at tabloid theaters , thus establishing her new image as a worthy older, albeit difficult lady.

She had another highly acclaimed film appearance in 1945 as 'Madame Bonnet' in Boule de suif based on Guy de Maupassant by director Christian-Jaque alongside Micheline Presle and Louis Salou . In 1950 she made a well-known stage comeback at the Maison de Molière in a role in the play La Folle Aventure . She also gave a much-noticed tour with the play of the same name based on the novel The Queen's Collar by Alexandre Dumas the Elder . In L'affaire Naundorf. She embodied Énigmes de l'histoire , now an honorary member of the Comédie-Française , the role of Agathe de Rambaud .

She had her last big appearance in 1967 at the age of eighty as "Madame Pernelle" in Tartuffe in Molière .
