André Antoine (born January 31, 1858 in Limoges , † October 19, 1943 in Le Pouliguen , Loire-Atlantique ) was French stage manager.

Life

Antoine was an employee of the gas distribution company and led its amateur drama group. Using her as a basis, he founded the Théâtre Libre in Paris in 1887 . With the help of Émile Zola , he founded the private theater association to play socially critical plays by Zola, Henrik Ibsen , Gerhart Hauptmann and others in closed general meetings . a. to stage past the censorship.

Antoine tried to create a stage design that was as realistic as possible. His first major success was The Power of Darkness (1888). He was the first to stage Ghosts (1890), The Wild Duck (1891), Fräulein Julie (1893) and The Weavers (1893) in France . With his work he paved the way for naturalism and thus had a revolutionary effect on French theater. After the theater was closed due to financial problems in 1894, he continued his work from 1896 to 1906 at the Théâtre Antoine and from 1906 to 1914 at the Théâtre Odéon . He turned increasingly to the classics such as Shakespeare , but could no longer build on his earlier successes. Affected by debt, André Antoine mainly worked as a journalist and theater critic . From 1917 to 1922 he directed several films, including the influential Zola film adaptation of La Terre (1921).
