Joseph Meiß

Joseph Meiß (born December 21, 1878 in Krefeld , † January 6, 1967 in Wuppertal ) was a German Catholic clergyman .

Life

Meiß was born as the son of the Krefeld silk manufacturer Johannes Meiß and Maria geb. Sallmann and grew up with seven siblings. He studied theology and was on 15 March 1902, the Cologne Cathedral for priests ordained .

Meiß worked as a chaplain in several cities, from 1902 to 1909 in the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche in Aachen , then from 1909 to 1913 in St. Marien in Velbert . In Heiligenhaus in the Mettmann deanery he received his first pastor's position in St. Suitbertus on October 20, 1913 . From April 12, 1922 until 1966 he worked at the Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Wuppertal- Elberfeld . In addition to his work at the Sacred Heart Church Meiß was from December 1930 to 1963 dean of the deanery Wuppertal-Elberfeld and from January 1954 to 1963 the city dean of Wuppertal. In the last days of the Second World War it was thanks to personalities such as the two Catholic deans Adolf Goebeler (1881–1954) and Joseph Meiß as well as the later superintendent Johannes Schlingensiepen (1898–1980) for their intervention in the commanders of the German associations in Wuppertal, that Hitler's Nero order was not carried out in Wuppertal. For Ehrendomherrn the chief metropolitan church of Cologne (Cologne Cathedral) Meiß was appointed in May 1955, the appointment as non-resident cathedral chapter took place in December 1959. Meiß received the dignity of papal house prelate in 1962.

He was released from the office of dean at the beginning of January 1964 and received the honorary title of city dean, dean Wilhelm Zündorf (1903–1968) succeeded him as city dean. In old age, after more than 40 years in the parish, Meiß asked his bishop to retire on October 1, 1966, which he was also granted. After a short illness he died in early January 1967. His grave is in the Catholic cemetery Uellendahler Straße / Röttgen.
