Michael Strauch (born August 27, 1635 in Wittenberg ; † January 6, 1709 there ) was a German mathematician.

Life

Michael Strauch was born as the son of the lawyer Johann Strauch and his wife Katharina Blume. He received his first training from private tutors. After studying at the University of Leipzig and at the University of Wittenberg , he acquired the academic degree of Magister in Philosophy in his hometown on April 29, 1658 . Strauch soon completed an educational trip that took him to the University of Oxford to the mathematician John Wallis and to Danzig to the astronomer Johannes Hevelius . With a multitude of impressions he returned to Wittenberg and became an adjunct of the philosophical faculty here on March 24, 1664 .

He took over the professorship of lower mathematics from his brother Aegidius Strauch II on March 10, 1665 and in 1689 became professor of higher mathematics. In addition, Strauch also took part in the organizational tasks of the Wittenberg University. He was dean of the philosophical faculty several times and administered the rectorate of the alma mater in the summer semesters of 1674 and 1694 . On January 13, 1709 he was buried in the Wittenberg Castle Church. Here an epitaph was built for him , but it was a victim of the Seven Years' War in 1760 .

In November 1669, Strauch married Anna Magaretha (* Döbeln; † April 26, 1695 in Wittenberg), the daughter of the lawyer and syndic in Döbeln, Johann Zimmermann. The children are known from marriage:
