Johann Strauch (born June 26, 1588 in Wittenberg , † September 19, 1639 in Wittenberg) was a German legal scholar .

Life

Strauch's father Agidius Strauch († December 30, 1597 in Wittenberg) came from Brabant , from where he had to flee in the fifties of the 16th century due to his Protestant faith. He had married three times. Through his first marriage, he had acquired a general store and until his death became a well-known citizen and Kramer, who had his residence on Wittenberger Markt . His mother Gertraud, the daughter of the Wittenberg citizen, bookbinder and parish clerk Arnold Platteis, had married his father on May 8, 1581.

After he had started his philosophical studies at the University of Wittenberg on October 3, 1597 , he went to Prague , where he stayed with a relative and continued his studies. There he spent a few years and then returned to Wittenberg, where he in 1618 the licentiate acquired the rights in 1619 to the doctor of law doctorate and following the Electoral Court and Government was working at Wittenberg Hofgericht.

On April 23, 1622 he went to Dresden as a councilor , where he worked as an advisor to the Saxon government. After the death of Bartolomäus Reusner in 1630 he became professor and full professor of the law faculty at the University of Wittenberg. He worked there for a few more years. He died in 1639 and was buried there on October 2, 1639. During his activity at the Wittenberg Academy, he administered the rectorate of the educational institution in 1631 and 1639 .

On May 29, 1621 he had married Katharina, the daughter of Wittenberg councilor Michael Blume (born January 27, 1553 in Freiberg, † January 18, 1613 in Wittenberg). The marriage resulted in seven children, a daughter and five sons outlived their father. Of the children are known:

  • Michael Strauch II (born August 27, 1635 in Wittenberg; † January 6, 1709 in Wittenberg)
  • Christian Strauch (born June 5, 1637 in Wittenberg, † August 14, 1659 in Wittenberg) was a student
  • Gottfried Strauch (born August 12, 1639 in Wittenberg, † January 10, 1643 in Wittenberg)
