Armando Aste

Armando Aste (born January 6, 1926 in Rovereto ; † September 1, 2017 there ) was one of the most influential Italian alpinists of the post-war period.

He led the first ascent of the Eiger north face by an Italian group in 1962 (Armando Aste, Pierlorenzo Acquistapace, Gildo Airoldi, Andrea Mellano, Romano Perego and Franco Solina). He was also the first mountaineer to climb the southern tower of the Torres del Paine (in German 'the towers of Paine') in Patagonia. Due to his numerous first ascents on mountains in the Dolomites and the Andes , many climbing routes were named after him (e.g. the Aste-Susatti route on Monte Civetta near Belluno, first ascent together with Fausto Susatti on August 26th - 28th, 1954) .

Other selected first ascents in the Dolomites by Armando Aste were:

  • Cima del Focobon, together with Franco Solina, August 16-19, 1958,
  • Piz Seranto south face, with Franco Solina, August 10th - 15th, 1959,
  • Crozzon di Brenta, with Milo Navasa, August 26-28, 1959,
  • Marmolada d'Ombretta, with Franco Solina, August 24-29, 1964. Reinhold Messner was the first to repeat this route, which is now known as the “Aste Route” or “Via dell'Ideale”. The first winter ascent was carried out by Jerzy Kukuczka (March 17-23 , 1973).
