Balthasar is the Greek form of the Babylonian given name Bel-šarru-uṣur . It means Baal / God save the king .
The name is passed down from a Babylonian regent from the 6th century, who was also mentioned in the Bible ( Dan 28 EU ). It was also used as an epithet of the prophet Daniel in the Greek version of the Hebrew Bible / Old Testament (Septuagimta) Dan 10.1 EU .
In Central Europe, at least since the 9th century, Balthasar was used as the name of one of the three wise men (astrologers) when Jesus was born and has been used as a first name ever since.
