Karl Balthasar

Johann Karl Balthasar (born September 9, 1868 in Zaschwitz , † June 14, 1937 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German Protestant theologian and university professor .

Life

Karl Balthasar was the son of the teacher and organist Julius Balthasar from Zaschwitz in the Mansfeld lake district . After attending the Stiftsgymnasium in Zeitz until 1889, he studied theology at the University of Halle , where he passed the first theological exam in 1893. The successful completion of the second theological exam took place in Magdeburg in 1895 .

In 1894 Karl Balthasar entered the service of the Count von der Schulenburg as an educator . In 1898 he became pastor in Krüssau , later he moved as such to Hohenziatz and was pastor in Ammendorf until he retired in 1933 . In 1925 he became a member of the Masonic lodge Zu den Drei Degen in Halle, which he left again in 1928. Politically, he was active in the newly founded DNVP , which he left in 1930. Immediately after the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists, he joined the NSDAP , which he left again in June 1934.

Karl Balthasar also completed a musicological training at the University of Halle at an early stage, having already participated as a student in the school and church choir. He studied musicology from 1919 to 1922 as a part-time job. Robert Franz was one of his teachers . At the same time he was appointed lecturer in musical liturgy at the University of Halle in 1919. He was appointed professor in 1920.

In 1931, Karl Balthasar became a specialist advisor for the new edition of the hymn book for the Province of Saxony and Anhalt. He himself had also composed a waltz and two songs in 1890.
