Basilius Balthasar (born July 23, 1709 in Lucerne ; † November 20, 1776 ) was from 1734 to 1737 under the supervision of Mauritius Müller the librarian of the St. Gallen monastery .

Basilius Balthasar was born in Lucerne as the son of Kleinrat Beat Franz and Elisabeth Dulliker. He was the brother of Franz Niklaus Leonz. In 1727 he made his profession in the Benedictine monastery of St. Gallen, and in 1733 he was ordained a priest. He then worked in the archive and in the library. In 1735 he became a rhetoric teacher , 1743 prefect of the school, 1745 apostolic notary and chapter secretary , 1751 brother instructor . From 1754 he was secretary of the Swiss Benedictine Congregation .

Basilius Balthasar emerged as a speaker on important occasions, for example at the reception of the papal nuncio in St. Gallen in 1746 or at the reception of Cardinal Angelo Maria Querini in 1747 . He is known to have 13 printed and 25 unprinted ethical , theological and historical writings, including the three-volume continuation of the St. Gallen monastery chronicle (1753-1758) covering the years 1654 to 1696. Basilius was ascribed diligence and erudition, but little critical judgment.
