Mauritius Müller , also Moritz Müller , born Kaspar Josef Müller (* February 12, 1677 ; † September 16, 1745 ) was a Swiss clergyman and, with interruptions, from 1707 to 1738 librarian of the St. Gallen monastery .

Life

Father Mauritius (or Moritz) came from Wil . In 1693 he is attested in the monastery of St. Gallen, where he made his profession on May 31, 1696 . In 1698 he became a subdeacon , in 1699 a deacon . He was ordained a priest on May 21, 1701, the primacy followed on June 12 of the same year. He was known for his erudition.

Act

On August 15, 1701, Father Mauritius was commissioned by Abbot Leodegar Bürgisser to continue the monastery chronicle. A year later he was given the task of editing a commemorative publication on the occasion of the anniversary of the Swiss Benedictine Congregation . He also worked as a teacher in the St. Gallen monastery. On April 7, 1707 the abbot appointed him abbot librarian. Further teaching activities followed both in St. Gallen and in Pfäfers . From 1711 he is again attested as a monastery librarian. In the context of the Toggenburg War , he made a contribution to saving the books. Ultimately, however, he too had to flee from St. Gallen and from then on worked as a theology professor in Rheinau and as a teacher in Bellinzona .

Back from exile, Mauritius was again in charge of the St. Gallen Abbey Library from 1719 to 1722 . He then took on pastoral tasks in various places ( Berg , Alt St. Johann , Peterzell ). Because of his rhetorical skills and the friendly way he was treated, he was highly valued as a pastor. In 1734 he returned to St. Gallen and appeared there again as a librarian. In addition, he performed other pastoral services, especially on festive occasions such as the translation of the catacomb saint Pankratius in Wil in 1738 . From 1739 he is attested in various official functions in Rorschach , Wil and St. Gallen. Father Mauritius wrote numerous printed and unprinted writings, mainly historiographical, theological and catechetical (sermons) content.
