Columban Bishop (born May 2, 1674 in Eggersriet as Jakobus Bishop , † September 26, 1740 ) was the librarian of the St. Gallen monastery from 1706 to 1707 .

Father Columban was the son of Johann Bischof and Anna Krömler. In 1687 he is attested in the monastery of St. Gallen, where he made his profession on July 22nd, 1692 . In 1697 he became a subdeacon , in 1698 a deacon . He was ordained a priest on December 19, 1699, and the primacy followed on January 3, 1700. In 1736 he suffered a stroke from which he recovered only slowly. At the end of his life he also suffered from dropsy of the chest .

Since May 1700, Father Columban was a teacher of Greek and syntax in the St. Gallen monastery school . This was followed in 1701 as an assistant archivist. After further teaching activities, he came to St. Johann in March 1706 , where he took over the office of master chef. In the same year he was appointed head chef and librarian in St. Gallen. From 1711 he headed the monastery printing house. When the St. Gallen monks had to flee from the monastery in the course of the Toggenburg War , Father Columban moved to Klus, where he worked as a pastor. In 1720 he was the administrator of the moated castle and confessor in Altstätten . This was followed by monastic official activities in St. Johann , where he was entrusted with the task of re-regulating the territorial borders in Toggenburg . In 1729 he became pastor in Alt St. Johann . From September 1735 he held the office of governor in St. Gallen. Due to illness, numerous changes of location and office followed from 1736.
