Joseph Anton Felix von Balthasar

Joseph Anton Felix von Balthasar (born January 11, 1737 in Lucerne ; † April 8, 1810 there ) comes from the Lucerne patrician family of the same name and was a Swiss statesman and historian. He was one of the founders of the Helvetic Society and donated the Lucerne Citizens Library.

Balthasar was born as the son of Franz Urs Balthasar and Maria Anna Luzia Schumacher on January 11, 1737 in Lucerne. He attended the Jesuit grammar school in Lucerne until 1753, then the Royal Academy in Lyon until 1755, where he conducted scientific, philosophical and historical studies. Balthasar became a member of the large and later the small council in Lucerne as early as 1755. From 1762 he was a member of the Helvetic Society, which he initiated together with Isaak Iselin . He and his family lived in a house on Kapellplatz that had come to the Balthasar through his grandmother Margaritha Balthasar-Schumacher (granddaughter of the mayor Ludwig Schumacher ).
