Life

Philipp Jakob von Balthasar came from the Pomeranian Balthasar family , from which various theologians, lawyers and scholars emerged. He was the second son of the general superintendent of Swedish Pomerania Jakob Heinrich von Balthasar from his marriage to Catharina Margaretha Zeidler († November 6, 1756). He was initially taught in his parents' house and attended the Greifswald city school . He then studied at the University of Greifswald and from 1752 at the University of Göttingen . After returning from Göttingen, he was in Greifswald for Master and Doctor of Philosophy PhD .

As a private lecturer, he held lectures at Greifswald University for several years and preached in the Jacobikirche instead of his father . In 1761 he was appointed assistant to the pastor Christian Brunst in Grimmen . Since 1763 he was married to Caroline Wilhelmine Luise Brunnemann, daughter of the Bergen preposition Christian Anton Brunnemann. In 1768 he succeeded Brunst and took over the pastoral position at St. Marienkirche as a prepositus , where he worked until his death.

He dealt with economics and agriculture and applied his knowledge to the parish property in Bartmannshagen. He wrote essays for the Hannoversche Magazin and a history of the Grimmen Synod . The latter contained the biographies of previous preachers as well as historical-statistical information on the Synod since the introduction of the Reformation in Pomerania . The archive of the general superintendent for Swedish Pomerania was available to him. The extensive library inherited from his father was sold after Philipp Jacob's death and scattered in the process.

His daughter Charlotte Friedrike Sophie (1773-1857) was the great-grandmother of the aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal .
