Catherine Cappa Scorsese , née Catherine Cappa , (born April 16, 1912 in New York City , † January 6, 1997 , ibid) was an American actress and mother of director Martin Scorsese .

Life

Catherine Scorsese's father Martin Cappa worked in the theater and her mother Domenica ran a business. She was Italian American and got her first role when her son made the film It's Not Just You, Murray! turned. She often played the role of the Italian or Italian-American mom .

Her best-known appearances were in the successful gangster films Good Fellas - Three Decades in the Mafia , from 1990, as the mother of Tommy (played by Joe Pesci ) and Casino (1995) as the mother of shop owner Artie Piscano ( Vinny Vella ).

Catherine Scorsese also starred in films that her son did not direct. She was married to Charles Scorsese (1913-1993), who also played minor roles in Scorsese films. She was also the editor of the cookbook Italianamerican: The Scorsese Family Cookbook .

Catherine Scorsese died on January 6, 1997 at the age of 84 of complications from her Alzheimer's disease . She was buried in Moravian Cemetery in New Dorp , Richmond County .
