Petra Roettig

Petra Roettig (* 1957 in Stuttgart ) is a German art historian and exhibition curator.

life and work

Roettig studied art history, history, Romance studies and folklore in Freiburg and Hamburg from 1976 to 1985, and from 1985 to 1988 at the Warburg Institute in London. In 1989 she received her doctorate at the University of Hamburg on a topic on graphics from the Reformation period. She then worked as an antiquarian and employee of an auction house in Hamburg. From 1991 to 1996 she was a research associate at the Political Iconography Research Center at the Art History Department of the University of Hamburg in the Warburg House.

Since 1997 she was initially a research assistant at the Hamburger Kunsthalle . In 2001 she became curator in the Kupferstichkabinett for photography and graphics from 1900 to the present. Since 2007 she has directed the Galerie der Gegenwart at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, initially together with Sabrina van der Ley and since 2012 with Brigitte Kölle . and is responsible for graphics, drawing and photography.

In the Kunsthalle she curated exhibitions by Marc Brandenburg, Thomas Demand, Horst Janssen, Heribert C. Ottersbach and Roni Horn, among others. Petra Roettig is a member of the art commission of the Hamburg cultural authority and the author and editor of numerous publications on contemporary art.
