Wilhelm Nieswandt

Wilhelm Julius Nieswandt (born January 6, 1898 in Kröligkeim , Gerdauen district ; † June 5, 1978 in Essen - Rüttenscheid ) was a German entrepreneur and politician of the ( SPD ).

Life and work

Wilhelm Nieswandt was the son of a small farmer. In 1919 he moved to Essen and on January 23, 1920 married his wife Anna, née Bohn. The two sons Alfred and Herbert emerged from this marriage.

After graduating from elementary school, Nieswandt completed an apprenticeship in blacksmithing at Friedrich Krupp AG , attended the mechanical engineering school and passed the blacksmith's examination in 1923. He then worked as a blacksmith, went to the administration and business academy and also studied mathematics and business administration (private studies). In 1933, during the time of National Socialism , Nieswandt was dismissed, harassed and imprisoned at times because of his social democratic sentiments. In 1934 he started his own business as a manufacturer with a locksmith's shop and forge and four years later founded a steel construction company. His sons were involved in running the 300-strong company.

Later he was chairman of the supervisory board of Essener Verkehrs-AG .

Wilhelm Nieswandt found his final resting place in the southwest cemetery in Essen , which was elevated to the honor of the city of Essen.

Nieswandt had been a member of the SPD and the Krupp workers' council since 1914. Between 1945 and 1951 he was elected chairman of the Essen subdistrict of the SPD.

Nieswandt was a council member of the city of Essen in 1932/33 and from 1946 to 1969, chairing the SPD parliamentary group from 1946 to 1956 and mayor from 1956 to 1969. From 1946 to 1970 he was a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament appointed by the military government in 1946 and elected in 1947 .
