Theodor Reismann-Grone

Theodor Reismann-Grone (born September 30, 1863 in Meppen , † March 29, 1949 in Essen ) was a German journalist and editor and owner of the Rheinisch-Westfälische Zeitung and the Berliner Zeitung Die Post . From 1933 to 1937 he was Lord Mayor of Essen.

Life

After attending grammar school in Meppen and Osnabrück, Reismann-Grone studied history and political science at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Berlin and the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich as well as in London and Paris from 1883 . His dissertation was supervised by Gustav Droysen (1838–1908), who was called from Berlin to Halle / Saale, where Reismann-Grone was awarded a doctorate in 1889. phil. received his doctorate. During his studies Reismann-Grone became a member of the Teutonia Munich Landsmannschaft in 1884 . After completing his studies, he began his journalistic career with the weekly newspapers “Staats-Korrespondenz” and “Die Industrie”, for which he mainly wrote articles on economic, colonial and socio-political issues. Since the beginning of the 1890s he worked for the “Central Press Office” in Düsseldorf, an organization of the Rhenish-Westphalian heavy industry. After a professional interlude as managing director of the mining association , in 1895 he took over the post of editor-in-chief at the "Rheinisch-Westfälische Zeitung" in Essen. Jakob Funke , the founder of the Funke media group, learned his trade at the Reismann-Grone-Verlag.

Reismann-Grone was one of the co-founders of the radical nationalist and anti-Semitic Pan - German Association founded in 1891 , in whose main management he was active for many years. Since the turn of the century, however , there were serious disputes between him and the radical Protestant wing of the association, which was led by the Munich publisher Julius F. Lehmann , as Reismann-Grone refused to leave the Catholic Church. Lehmann therefore accused him of being a “representative of Rome” and thus “nationally unreliable”. As a result of this conflict, the entire organization was faced with an acid test in 1903. Finally, Reismann-Grone resigned from the Pan-German Association during the First World War because he no longer wanted to support the policy of chairman Heinrich Claß, which was aimed at preserving Austria-Hungary .

He was a member of the German Colonial Society .

As early as the 1920s, Reismann-Grone was an enthusiastic supporter of Hitler , with whom he was in correspondence. He used his numerous business contacts in the Ruhr area to support them in their search for industrial sponsors. He officially joined the NSDAP on January 1, 1930 . However, the historian Stefan Frech suspects, since he joined the "Braunes Haus group" for particularly deserving supporters, that the entry date was retrospectively backdated in order to give these personalities more prestige. There are several indications of joining in 1932.

After Heinrich Maria Martin Schäfer was given leave of absence , he was appointed acting Lord Mayor of Essen on April 5, 1933 . However, since he had already exceeded the age limit, the formal appointment took place only after the entry into force of a special law on July 4, July 13, 1933. Reismann-Grone resigned from this office on April 30, 1937 because of a tax evasion affair. Just Dillgardt was his successor .

After his resignation, Reismann-Grone increasingly distanced himself from the National Socialist regime because he did not see the role of Pan-Germans and Old-Völkisch adequately appreciated in the Third Reich.

On the initiative of Reismann-Grone, the city of Essen's steel book was created, the city's guest book for entering personalities during their city visit. The steel book is still used today.

At times he wrote literature under the pseudonym "Dierck Seeberg".
