Gravestone at the Ostfriedhof Essen

After Theodor Wilhelm Varnhorst had been mayor of the city of Essen since 1787, together with Georg Heinrich Brüning (1727–1806), he was the only mayor of the city of Essen from 1804 after the introduction of the Prussian magistrate . He carried the title Maire after Napoléon had introduced an administration based on the French model in the model states of the Rhine Confederation . In 1808, Varnhorst was replaced as Maire by Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Müller .

Varnhorst was buried in the cemetery at Kettwiger Tor . When this was abandoned in 1955 for urban planning reasons, the tomb, which was later named the town's honorary grave, was transferred to the Ostfriedhof in Essen .
