Rafael Velásquez

Rafael Velásquez (born January 6, 1930 in El Sombrero ; † 2009 ) was a Venezuelan trumpeter and flugelhorn player who was known under the name El Gallo .

Velásquez participated in jam sessions, jazz concerts and festivals at the Caracas Jazz Club in the 1950s . He played in the orchestra of Luis Alfonzo Larrain and recorded the album South American Brothers (1956, by John La Porta ) with the Orquesta Casablanca , which became known as Venezuela's first jazz album.

In the 1960s he played with the orchestra of Frank Hernández ("El Pavo") and in the 1970s with the salsa orchestra El Trabuco Venezolano . He gave a concert with Eumir Deodato in the Poliedro de Caracas and performed in the Juan Sebastián Bar , the jazz temple of Caracas. Since the 1950s he has worked on numerous recordings with Frank Hernández, Federico Britos Ruiz , Alberto Naranjo and Luz Marina, among others . In 1995 his only solo album El Gallo was released (with Héctor Velásquez , trombone; José Velásquez , double bass; Ramón Carranza , tenor saxophone; José Rodríguez , trumpet; Alberto Lazo (piano); Iván Velásquez , drums).
