Hildegard Emmel

Hildegard Emmel (born July 23, 1911 in Frankfurt am Main ; † January 6, 1996 in Bern ) was a German specialist in German and university professor.

biography

Hildegard Emmel received her doctorate in 1935 with a thesis on the relationship between ere and triuwe in the Nibelungenlied under Hartmann and Wolfram and initially worked as a teacher. After a first attempt at habilitation in Hamburg was unsuccessful, Emmel moved to the eastern part of the country and from 1950 worked as a research assistant at the Goethe dictionary at the Academy of Sciences in East Berlin . In 1951 she successfully completed her habilitation at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Rostock , this was the first habilitation for a woman at the University of Rostock. First she taught in Rostock, in 1956 she was appointed to the University of Greifswald . Emmel left Greifswald in 1958 due to political problems and moved back to the Federal Republic. From 1960 she worked in Bielefeld, after which she lived and worked mainly abroad, a. a. in Norway, Finland, Turkey and most recently the United States . After her retirement, she moved to Bern in 1981, but continued to work.

On November 15, 1991 she received an honorary doctorate from the University of Greifswald.
