The Goethe dictionary opens with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's vocabulary the most extensive and important German Individual vocabulary. The editors of the dictionary of meanings are the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences , the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen and the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences , funded by the academy program of the federal and state governments.

The company was started by the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin in December 1946 on the basis of a memorandum from its member Wolfgang Schadewaldt . The project was partly based on preliminary work by Otto Pniower . After the document archives and the material collections were essentially completed in the mid-1960s, the actual article work gradually began in 1965. The Goethe dictionary is being developed in cooperation with the Göttingen and Heidelberg Academy of Sciences in three workplaces in Berlin / Leipzig, Hamburg and Tübingen.

It is based on an archive of around 3.5 million text documents (from A to cypress-related ), the use of which is also open to anyone interested in science. Goethe's traditional (German) vocabulary comprises more than 90,000 individual words. This abundance corresponds to a variety of linguistic means of expression and forms of appearance: from personally colored everyday expressions to the strict style of scientific prose, from the conventionally shaped official style to multi-layered poetry: a coexistence of different language varieties, functional and genre styles or types of text.

From the in -Kohlhammer Verlag in Stuttgart appearing dictionary are six completed volumes and delivery VII / 1st The lexicographical processing is currently in the letter area T / U / V. The digitization of five volumes and their publication on the Internet was carried out in a project funded by the DFG at the competence center for electronic cataloging and publication processes in the humanities at the University of Trier.
