Hubert Distler (born July 13, 1919 in Lindau ; † June 1, 2004 in Grafrath ) was a German painter and graphic artist . In 1998 Distler was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his life's work.

Life

Distler lived mainly in Grafrath near Munich . The first watercolors and drawings were created during the war . In 1942 he began studying with Franz Klemmer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, who taught church painting. In 1943 he was called up again and seriously wounded at Nikolayev's, he lost a leg.

After the end of the war, he continued his studies with Klemmer from 1947 to 1952.

In the mid-1950s he collaborated with well-known architects, he mainly designed church furnishings for them , but also created graphics and woodcuts . A particularly intensive collaboration resulted with the architects Franz Lichtblau , Olaf Andreas Gulbransson and Theo Steinhauser , who particularly valued his idiosyncratic, often highly abstract style of Christian symbolism.

His works include glass window designs , ceiling frescoes , crucifixes, and he also designed organ cases.
