Giovanni Vincenzo Gravina (born January 20, 1664 in Roggiano near Cosenza , Calabria , † January 6, 1718 in Rome ) was an Italian writer and lawyer and co-founder of the Accademia dell'Arcadia .

Gravina came from a respected family and received extensive training under the guidance of his maternal uncle Gregorio Caloprese , who was recognized as a poet and philosopher, before studying secular and canon law in Naples . In 1689 he came to Rome, where he co-founded the Accademia dell'Arcadia in 1690 in a group of poets influenced by Queen Christina of Sweden . Two different tendencies soon developed there: that of Gravina, which was modeled on Dante and Homer ; and the more moderate of the Crescimbeni , which is on Petrarchcalled. Because of this dispute Gravina resigned from the Akademia and founded the Accademia dei Quirini in 1711 .

Gravina discovered the poet and librettist Pietro Metastasio and took over his training. He later also became a member and outstanding representative of the Accademia dell'Arcadia , which his sponsor had left in 1711.
