Frankie Vázquez

Efraín "Frankie" Vázquez (born January 6, 1958 in Salinas ) is a Puerto Rican percussionist and singer.

Vázquez grew up in New York and started playing the conga at the age of ten. In 1970 he returned to Guayama, Puerto Rico with his parents. At the age of sixteen he founded his own orchestra, Los Generales , with which he performed in his father's restaurant. He was also a member of two other orchestras.

In 1977 his cousin David Sánchez invited him to New York to join the Fuego 77 orchestra . With this he took the title New York on the label Alegre Records the following year . In 1983 he became a member of the Sonido Taiborí and the Orquesta Calidad , later the Orquesta Metropolitana and the New Swing Sextet and finally the Conjunto Salsa by Wayne Gorbea . He was involved in Gorbea's first album Sigan Bailando as a Güiro player, singer and co-band leader.

With Harry Justiniano , the bassist of the conjunto salsa , and his brother Ángel , Vázquez joined the Charanga Charason of the pianist Héctor Serrano in 1987 . In 1990 he succeeded Herman Olivera as lead singer in Manny Oquendo's Conjunto Libre . In collaboration with Javier Vázquez y su Sonora , the album Ella Me Olvido was created , which was released on Cuco Records .

With Héctor Serrano he recorded the tracks Ese Gallo and A Las Seis in New York in 1993 . In 1994 his first album was released with the Conjunto Libre under the title Mejor Que Nunca / Better Than Ever , which included the song Albanciosa (arranged by Papo Vásquez and with a trombone solo by Arturo Velasco ). In the same year his hit Las ingratitudes , the English-language title I Want You (with trombonists Jimmy Bosch and Dan Reagan ) and - with Yayo el Indio and Rogelio Martínez , the director of Sonora Matancera - the recording De Nuevo ... In 1996 he was on the album On The Move! ( ¡Muevete! ) Of the Conjunto Libre , which was recorded live in San Francisco. In the following year, the production Los Soneros Del Barrio: Martin Arroyo & Frankie Vázquez was created in collaboration with Martin Arroyo and after his death with Ricky González . With Geraldo Rosales he recorded the album La Salsa Es Mi Vida in 2001 . He was a singer alongside Herman Olivera and Ray De La Paz on the Spanish Harlem Orquesta's album Un Frand Día en el Barrio (2002) , which was nominated for a Grammy for Best Salsaal Album .

In 2003 Vázquez was musical director for the recording of the album Un Congo Me Dio La Letra by Sergio Rivera's Grupo Caribe , where he himself interpreted the Guaguancó Cabiaré . With the Soneros del Barrio he recorded the album Siguiendo La Tradición in the same year . In 2004 he separated from the Spanish Harlem Orquesta to start his own group. In the same year he sang the title Mi Rumba ers Candela on Ricky González 'first album Oasis - accompanied by Ray Barreto , Johnny Pacheco , Dave Valentín and Kimmy Sabater , among others .

With Johnny Cruz & The Dream Team Band he recorded the album Back To The Classics in 2006 , with Chino Núñez the albums From A Different Perspective and Doctor Salsa - Vol. 2 were created the following year . On the 2008 double CD Salseando , Vázquez could be heard as singer alongside Adalberto Santiago , Hermán Olivera , Ray De La Paz , Darvel García , Wichy Camacho , Tito Allen and Caco Senante . In 2009 the CDs 40th Aniversario, Vol. 2 with the Lebrón Brothers as well as in the series The Latin Giants of Jazz ¡Ven Baila Conmigo! ( Come Dance With Me! ); the latter with the percussionist José Madera , the trombonists Sam Burtis and Reynaldo Jorge , the trumpeters John Walsh and Pete Nater and the saxophonist Bobby Porcelli .

In 2010 Vázquez recorded the album Watch Out! With the Orquesta Mambo Legends . ¡Ten Cuidao! on. In 2011 he released the scrapbook Éxitos De Frankie Vázquez Y Los Soneros De Barrio, Año 2011 . With the Spanish orchestra La Sucursal de Barcelona he recorded the CD Sin Fronteras , of which he had composed twelve of the 14 tracks. In honor of Adalberto Santiago , he sang the title Vive Y Vacila on the album Tribute To the Chairman of the Board: Adalberto Santiago in 2012 .
