Josef Freiherr von Mering (born February 28, 1849 in Cologne , † January 5, 1908 in Halle an der Saale (also: Joseph )) was a German physician and researched in the field of physiology and pharmacology .

Life

Josef von Mering studied medicine at the Universities of Bonn , Greifswald and Strasbourg . At the University of Strasbourg he received his doctorate in 1874 under Felix Hoppe-Seyler , and in 1886 he also became an associate professor there. In 1887 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1890 he moved to the University of Halle , where he became head of the University Policlinic. In 1894 he was appointed full professor of internal medicine and in 1900 he was also appointed director of the medical university clinic. He was a Catholic denomination.

Together with Emil Fischer, Josef von Mering developed the sleeping pill Barbital , which was introduced in 1903 under the trade name Veronal , and was involved in the synthesis and testing of paracetamol . Mering became famous for his discovery of the importance of the pancreas for metabolism. He removed a dog's pancreas to study the sequelae. Some time later the dog showed the typical signs of diabetes mellitus , and Mering was able to establish the connections between diabetes and the pancreas. This laid the foundations for the discovery of insulin in 1889 . Together with Oskar Minkowski , he thereby contributed to confirming the thesis advocated by the French doctor Étienne Lancereaux that the cause of diabetes was to be found in the pancreas.

In 1892, for example, he found that diabetic dogs had a temporary improvement in their condition through the implantation of pancreatic tissue.

The German Diabetes Center (DDZ), Leibniz Center for Diabetes Research at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, has been awarding the Von Mering Medal to personalities who have been involved in German diabetes research and the DDZ for many years since 2016 .
