Piersanti Mattarella (born May 24, 1935 in Castellammare del Golfo , † January 6, 1980 in Palermo ) was an Italian politician who made an appearance particularly through the fight against the Mafia . Mattarella was murdered in a 1980 attack by Mafia members.

Life

Mattarella grew up in a family of politicians: he was the son of Bernardo Mattarella , his brother is the current Italian President Sergio Mattarella . The member of Democrazia Cristiana held positions in parliament from 1967 and finally became President of the Sicily Region in 1978 . As the main goal of his tenure, he saw the fight against the Mafia and its entanglement with politics, sometimes even with his own party members. He wanted to free all public offices from Mafia members and to establish the usual legal basis in this area in Sicily in the rest of Italy. After rumors of an imminent assassination of Mattarella became loud, Giulio Andreotti contacted the mafia boss Stefano Bontade and tried to dissuade him from the plan, but the attempt failed.

On January 6, 1980, Piersanti Mattarella was murdered in Palermo by the Corleonesi in front of his residence in Via Libertà . According to Pentito Francesco Marino Mannoia , Mattarella's murderers were Cosa Nostra members Salvatore Federico , Francesco Davì , Santo Inzerillo and Antonio Rotolo .
