"Sneaky" Pete Kleinow (* 20th August 1934 in South Bend , Indiana ; † 6. January 2007 in Petaluma , California ) was a US -American country musician .

Beginnings

At the age of seventeen, Pete Kleinow saw a performance by steel guitarist Jerry Byrd and was instantly fascinated by the classic instrument of country music . After graduating from high school, he worked as a maintenance technician for the Michigan State Highway Department for ten years. In 1963 he moved to Los Angeles, where he found a job as a stop-motion animator in the film industry. In the evenings he often performed in clubs in the area with his steel guitar. Occasionally he worked as a session musician on recordings.

Career

In 1968 Byrds members Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman became aware of Kleinow. A little later they offered him a place in their planned start-up, the Flying Burrito Brothers . “Sneaky Pete” became a founding member of one of the first country rock formations in music history. After a successful record debut with the album Gilded Palace Of Sin , the Burritos experienced numerous line-up changes. Kleinow was almost always there, even when it was founded in 1979 as Burrito Brothers .

At the same time, he developed into a sought-after session musician who supported numerous stars - including John Lennon , Joni Mitchell and Stevie Wonder - in their productions. He also continued to work as a stop-motion animator. He has participated in several major Hollywood productions, among others, Terminator I and II. The all-rounder eventually got the opportunity, einzuspielen two albums of his own, where he by former companions, as the ex-Byrds Gene Parsons and Skip Battin was accompanied, .

During 2006, his family announced that Kleinow had Alzheimer's disease . He lived in a supervised facility until his death.
