Martin Hein (born January 6, 1954 in Wuppertal ) is a German Protestant theologian and former bishop of the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck .

Life

Hein studied law in Frankfurt am Main and Erlangen (1972–1975) and Protestant theology in Erlangen and Marburg (1975–1979). After promotion to the doctorate in theology in 1982, the Vicariate in Kassel -Oberzwehren (1982-1984) Hein was in 1984 ordained . He was then parish priest in Grebenstein (1984–1989) before he was appointed director of studies at the Evangelical Preacher's Seminary in Hofgeismar (1989–1994).

From 1995 to 2000, Hein was Dean of the Kassel- Mitte church district . From September 1, 2000 to September 29, 2019, he was Christian Zippert's successor, Bishop of the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck . His successor is Beate Hofmann .

In 2002 he became chairman of the board of the Evangelische Studiengemeinschaft eV (FEST) in Heidelberg . Since 2003 he has been a member of the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches . Since 2008 he has been the chairman of the ecumenical working group of Protestant and Catholic theologians on the Protestant side .

Hein has been one of the authors of the Internet platform Göttingen Sermons on the Internet since 2002 .

In 2014 Hein was appointed to the German Ethics Council as the successor to Wolfgang Huber .

In August 2018, Hein was appointed to the Council for Digital Ethics by the Hessian state government .

From March 2020, Hein will be chairman of the newly convened Climate Protection Council of the City of Kassel .

Scientific career

Hein was a research associate at the Reformation History Research Center in Erlangen (1979–1982) and was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD.

He completed his habilitation in April 2000 at the Department of Education / Human Sciences at the University of Kassel (Protestant theology / religious education: focus on church history).

In October 2005 the University of Kassel appointed Hein an honorary professor. Since 2002 he has been a member of the Historical Commission for Hesse .
