Temporary autonomous zone
The term Temporary Autonomous Zone was coined by the English-speaking writer and philosopher Hakim Bey . He established himself for social and political forms of action that create short-lived freedom. In this, according to Bey, the usual system laws are suspended.
The term was first used in Bey's book TAZ: The Temporary Autonomous Zone, Ontological Anarchy, Poetic Terrorism ("TAZ: The Temporary Autonomous Zone, Ontological Anarchy, Poetic Terrorism").
TAZ: The Temporary Autonomous Zone, Ontological Anarchy, Poetic Terrorism
In his book, Hakim Bey defines a Temporary Autonomous Zone as a situation in which the prevailing laws and orders are temporarily and locally invalidated. Authorities lose their power in this , new, unforeseeable encounters and shared experiences become possible. While states have to build on fixed structures, Temporary Autonomous Zones can quickly create spaces in which another or future form of society can be thought of or (ahead) lived.
In the book, Bey presents a conglomerate of situationist ideas , anecdotes, surrealist demands, art concepts , mysticism and anarchism . Bey's key terms are poetic terrorism, chaos, anarchy, sorcery, enjoyment and networking .
The practice of the idea
Ideas of Bey can be found in actions such as the first Love Parade , squatting , the Reclaim the Streets movement, the Chaos Communication Congress , flash mobs and the communication guerrilla , older and institutionalized also in carnival . These and similar, mostly non-violent forms of action spread worldwide. The practice of Temporary Autonomous Zone has parallels to guerrilla - tactics . The above-mentioned forms of action demonstrate the variety of possibilities for political intervention . In contrast to traditional guerrilla tactics, the actors often act non-violently. This can be explained by the basic understanding of a Temporary Autonomous Zone: The power of a state should not be broken through direct confrontation. It should be marginalized by not allowing alienated and, in particular, unfree relationships to dominate permanently and across the board.
