from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Henry Bromflete, 1st Baron Vescy (* around 1412 in Londesborough , Yorkshire , † January 6, 1469 ) was an English nobleman .

Life

Henry Bromflete was the third son of Sir Thomas Bromflete and Margaret, daughter of Edward St. John. He began his career in the Hundred Years' War with Henry V in 1417 in France and received by 1417/18 the accolade as a Knight Bachelor .

In 1432 Sir Henry was part of a diplomatic delegation negotiating a ceasefire with King Charles VII in France .

Sir Henry held the office of Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1432/33 and was a representative of the English delegation to the Council of Basel in 1434.

Henry VI. appointed him to Parliament by Writ of Summons on January 24, 1449, giving him the hereditary title of Baron Vescy .

During the Wars of the Roses , Baron Vescy fought for the House of Lancaster at the Battle of Blore Heath and in early July 1460 in the defense of the Tower of London along with John Lovel, 8th Baron Lovel and others against the advancing Yorkists under Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick and Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury .

After Edward IV's coronation from the House of York in 1461, Baron Vescy's previous loyalty to Lancaster did not appear to have negatively affected, as he was appointed to the first parliament of the new king.

Henry Bromflete, 1st Baron Vescy died on January 6, 1469 and was buried in Whitefriars Carmelite Monastry, London . A not inconsiderable part of his property was sold according to his last will and used for charitable purposes.

Marriages and offspring

In his first marriage he married Joan Holland around 1416 (around 1380-1434), a daughter of Thomas Holland, 2nd Earl of Kent . For her it was her fourth marriage, she was the widow of Edmund of Langley, 1st Duke of York , William Willoughby, 5th Baron Willoughby de Eresby and Henry Scrope, 3rd Baron Scrope of Masham . The marriage with her remained childless.
