The Commission Nationale de l'Informatique et des Libertés ( CNIL ; German  National Commission for Informatics and Freedoms ) is France's national data protection authority, based in Paris .

The CNIL was created by a law of January 6, 1978. It is an administrative authority independent of instructions, with a 17-strong college made up of four members of parliament, two members of the Economic and Social Council, six representatives of the highest French courts and another five qualified persons. The CNIL elects its President from among its members. The CNIL is chaired by Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin (2018).

The CNIL is responsible for complaints, makes recommendations on legislative projects and also provides advice on technical data protection ( data security ).

She is a member of the Article 29 Data Protection Working Party , in which she is represented by Anne Debet , and a member of the International Conference of Commissioners for Data Protection and the Protection of Privacy .
