from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gilbert Fitz Gilbert de Clare, 1st Earl of Pembroke , called Strongbow (* 1100 in Tonbridge ; † January 6, 1148 ) was an Anglo-Norman nobleman.

He was the second son of Gilbert FitzRichard , Lord of Clare , ( House of Clare ), and his wife Adelisa de Clermont. His brother was Richard FitzGilbert de Clare .

From his paternal uncle, Roger de Clare, he inherited the dominions of Bienfaite and Orbec in Normandy after 1131 . From his other paternal uncle, Walter (Gautier) de Clare , he inherited the lordship of Nether Gwent with Strigoil Castle in Wales in 1138 . In 1138 King Stephen of England appointed him Earl of Pembroke and gave him Pevensey Castle . King Stephen had appointed him his marshal as early as 1135 .

Around 1130 he married the former mistress of King Henry I of England , Isabel de Beaumont († after 1172), daughter of Robert de Beaumont , Count of Meulan , Lord of Beaumont-le-Roger , Earl of Leicester , and his wife Isabel de Vermandois . With her he had a son and a daughter:

  1. ⚭ 1174 Raymond FitzGerald "the fat one", constable of Leinster,
  2. ⚭ Geoffrey FitzRobert Lord of Kells, Leinster steward.

Gilbert was buried in Tintern Abbey, which his uncle Walter had donated in 1131.
